With 5G opening up new opportunities for service providers in the telecoms market, a new report from Ericsson examines how operators can make the most of these opportunities.
5G for business: a 2030 market compass says that service providers could account for up to $700bn or almost half the total value of the ICT market for 5G-enabled business-to-business (B2B) by 2030.
To capture share in this market, the report argues that service providers must look to expand beyond traditional mobile network services and consider what other roles in the B2B value chain to take and what use cases to address. The report also says that operators should act now.
The evolution of cellular IoT and private networks is one of the keys to establishing momentum for 5G-enabled business revenues, Ericsson says.
Enhanced video services, real-time automation, connected vehicles and remote operations through augmented and virtual reality are among the potential cases that span various industries. Of these, enhanced video services represent the largest value pool, accounting for up to 17% or $118bn of the total value by 2030.
Other key findings from the report include:
- Revenues for currently available services are expected to remain flat over the next decade, while B2B digitalisation opportunities will grow at a much faster pace.
- If realised, 5G-enabled B2B opportunities addressable for service providers could account for up to 35% on top of revenues for currently available services by 2030.
- To be successful in capturing this potential operators must act in the next 5 to 7 years, while roles and market shares are still being established.
Jan Karlsson, senior vice president and head of Business Area Digital Services at Ericsson, said: “With this compass we can better guide our customers in navigating in the 5G landscape beyond mobile broadband. However, the journey to grow the 5G business starts now by building momentum and identifying 5G-enabled B2B opportunities.”
